Webuild signs C$4.32B contract for Ontario Line underground section

Webuild signed a C$4.32 billion contract for the delivery of the Pape Tunnel and Underground Stations (PTUS) package of the Ontario Line.

In 2024, the development and advanced design phase was awarded. Now, the PTUS package moves into the execution stage. The project includes two twin tunnels and two underground stations. Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario awarded Webuild and FCC in a joint-venture. Crews will begin working on an underground section that will connect key transport hubs in Ontario.

The area included in the PTUS package is “technically challenging.” Crews will excavate two twin tunnels measuring three kilometers, two stations underground and a connection to the TTC’s Line 2 subway. Webuild has been awarded the RSSOM contract for “the supply of trains and technological systems for the new subway line.” The area is a “complex urban environment” with established infrastructure networks and underground utilities to contend with. Traffic also already travels both above and below ground.

The PTUS package will be delivered via a Progressive Design-Build (PDB) model. The model includes an established structured collaboration amongst the contractors, designers, and the client “from the earliest stages.” This particular model allows for a better and more effective project management due to its methodologies in construction and design solutions.

Webuild is involved in the Hazel McCallion Line.
