SEPTA breaks ground on 11th Street station accessibility improvements

Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) has broken ground on major renovations at 11th Street Station.
The $44 million project will add two new elevators, giving access from the street level to the eastbound and westbound platforms and making 11th Street Station fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Other planned improvements include:
- Communications system upgrades;
- Structural repairs and waterproofing improvements;
- Renovated entrances, flooring, tiling and lighting; and
- Improved signage and maps.
The station and the concourse between 11th and 13th streets will be closed to the public from Sept. 5 through Aug. 30, 2027. Bypassing the station is expected to reduce the project duration by at least 10 months and save up to $3 million.
The station is served by SEPTA’s heavy-rail L Line, also known as the Market-Frankford Line; it also connects to the B Line, the PATCO Speedline and Regional Rail commuter lines via underground pedestrian passageways to Jefferson Station.
While work is underway, riders on the L Line can board at 13th Street Station; passengers can transfer from heavy-rail lines to Regional Rail at 15th Street Station.
The project is partially funded by the Federal Transit Administration’s All Stations Accessibility Program.
When the renovation is completed, 27 of the 28 stations on the Market-Frankford Line will be fully accessible. Over the next 12 years, SEPTA will invest more than $700 million in making heavy-rail rand Regional Rail stations accessible.
