Assist in managing the daily operation of light rail transportation, ensuring the successful
implementation of strategies that produce safe, cost effective and high quality service.
Serve as the first line manager for light rail operators. Ensure safe and efficient rail
operations, manage employee performance, ensure excellent customer service, and
collaborate on continuous improvement initiatives.

Serve as an on-call manager for a twenty-four hour, seven day a week operation.

Ensure a commitment to safety through consistent and professional behaviors in
performance of job requirements that demonstrate safety is a fundamental value that
guides all aspects of our work. Perform related duties as required.

Serve as a good steward of TriMet by regularly utilizing our transit system to maintain a
strong and current understanding of customers’ experiences and of TriMet’s product and
service offerings.
Essential Functions
1. Maintain Rail Operator competency. Responsible for the recruitment and managing the
performance of Rail Operators. Evaluate individual and departmental performance. Provide
individual coaching, mentoring and counseling as required to enhance performance.

Monitor progress toward achieving individual and collective performance goals, provide
feedback and recognize achievement.

Responsible for the effective management of employee and labor relations issues; including
investigation, documentation and administering disciplinary action as required. Develop a
work environment that is inclusive, respectful and in full partnership with members and
officers of the ATU. Ensure consistent application of policies, procedures and labor
agreement throughout the workforce. Develop and maintain a productive, principle-based,
and creative problem-solving approach to employee and labor relations' issues.

2. Responsible for performing and supporting Competency Management System (CMS)
assessments including scheduling supervisors and training staff on CMS. Manage and
oversee assigned shift activities to ensure and optimized delivery of safe, secure, reliable,
and cost cost-effective delivery.
3. Provide direction and set standards for excellence in internal and external customer
service. Promote professional and courteous behavior with a creative approach to problem
resolution that creates a positive experience for the customer. Model and hold staff
accountable to be sensitive to the special needs of customers, including those from
culturally diverse backgrounds, the elderly, persons with disabilities, or other vulnerable
populations.
4. Provide leadership in emergency situations. Responsible for coordinating service
adjustments and to act as first responders in the field or to the base facility in the event of
accidents or service emergencies, service disruptions, inclement weather, natural disasters
and special events. Assist with incident response, troubleshooting and reporting system
deficiencies to resolution.
5. Supplement initial operator training through regular reinforcement of expectations,
supplying regular refresher courses, additional training and/or re-instruction as needed.
Actively support safety and security practices through a rigorous curriculum and regular
reinforcement of safety standards by ensuring employees are held to departmental safety
and security standards. Assist in the documentation, development and implementation of
policies, standard operating procedures, communication protocols, business processes, and
training programs. Recommend changes as appropriate.
Position Requirements
A minimum of a High School Diploma/GED or equivalent is required.
A Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration, Project Management, Business, Operations
Management, Transportation, Logistics, or Human Resources is preferred.
A minimum of four (4) years total credited experience.*
Three (3) years of experience in a transportation, transit, or service related industry is
required.

One (1) year experience in rail operations is preferred.
One year in a lead role in one of the following area: Control Center, Field Operations, and/or
Rail Transportation strongly preferred. Experience in managing large, complex systems.
Or any equivalent combination of training or experience.
*The amount of credit a candidate receives for prior years of experience is based on the
relevancy of that experience to the required or preferred prerequisites of the job
description. Experience is prorated based on hours worked. LRHR assigns and validates the
"credited experience".

Offers will be determined by a candidate’s education, training and relevant experience. Any
final offer of employment will fall within the range stated above. For transparency, we
choose to list the full available grade range, however, TriMet’s salary administration process
will ultimately determine the final salary offered.
