University of Alabama introduces electric bus fleet for research and transit

The University of Alabama has introduced a fleet of eight electric buses that provide campus transportation while also serving as a research platform.
The $12 million investment brings quieter and more energy-efficient rides to campus, with the buses collecting data on battery performance, charging, and energy use. Researchers will also study how Alabama's extreme heat affects the buses' range.
"A student may get on one of these buses simply because they need to get from one side of the campus to another. But at the same time, that bus can be generating data that helps our researchers better understand the future of mobility," University of Alabama President Peter Mohler said.
The university's long-term goal is to eventually transition its entire transit fleet to zero-emission vehicles.
