RIPTA launches RFP to build Downtown Transit Center through Joint Development

Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) has announced plans to launch a request for proposals (RFP) on January 17, 2023, to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the Transit Center on Dorrance Street in Downtown Providence through a progressive joint development project delivery model. Responses are due April 17, 2023 and a winning bid will be selected in the spring.
The new transit center will serve as the central bus depot and feature temperature-controlled passenger arrival and seating area, accommodation for bicyclists, and public meeting space. In contrast to the current sprawling footprint of Kennedy Plaza, which is spread out across an urban park, the transit center will provide a single organized location.
The proposal envisions a mixed-use development that will include an enclosed intermodal transit center, RIPTA administrative offices, and mixed-use transit-oriented development (TOD). The project, in part, is supported by a bond referendum to improve transit services and was incorporated into the long-range plan, Transit Forward RI 2040.
